Soundtrack to My Life- Killer/Papa Was A Rolling Stone

I’ve been teased about this alot, but I really dig George Michael.  I think my appreciation started once I heard this incredible version of this song. I first heard it as a passenger in car on my way to some photo shoot in Paris. I believe I was picked up in Belgium by the make-up artist and we drove either really late at night, or really early in the morning. Either way I was desperate to get some sleep, while Mr. Make-Up was trying to keep his own eyes open by playing his music rather loud. I dosed off and on, until this song came on. By the time the song was over every cell in my body was tingling, that’s how much I loved it. Believe it or not, but it still has that effect on me when I listen to it on headphones and I can afford to do nothing but listen to the song. Pure bliss.

Where to find me this weekend

Apr 22nd, 2008 Posted in Business Topics | no comment »

So as I mentioned before I have another double header this weekend, but for extra thrills I decided to do it in two different cities. Not just two different cities mind you, two whole different states!

On Saturday, I will be in Cary for Lazy Daze, from 9am until 5pm. So far the weather looks like it will be absolutely perfect. Then I am hiking up to Alexandria VA for Art on the Green on Sunday from noon until 5pm. I am glad the VA show is only 5 hours, as I am sure that I am going to pooped by the time that show is over.

So if you are close to any of those shows stop by and tell me hi, and make sure I am not napping in a corner somewhere.

Soundtrack to My Life- Carmina Burana

This piece of music still vibrates me down to my bones every time I hear it. I love it. It’s special to me because my entire school sang it my first year in high school. And let me tell you, it’s not only amazing to listen to, it’s even more thrilling to be a part in singing it.
We played the whole piece so much at home while I was learning it, that due to the great advantage of this song being a prime candidate for playing as loud as humanly tolerable it quickly turned into one of my mom’s top 3 Saturday clean up tunes.

So these weeks are a little overwhelming and busy and as you can tell I have not yet had the time to post the April contest on the 15th as I had promised. Here’s the contest: Leave a comment in this post about anything really, and you will be entered in the drawing. I will draw a random winning comment on May 1st. The winner will win a $30 gift certificate and free shipping!

Now have at it. And good luck!

One back 2 back shows weekend down…

I have a weekend of two fantabulous Richmond shows behind me, and I am revived and energized and inspired as a result. On Saturday I was at Fool For Art in Midlothian, right outside of Richmond VA. I left Raleigh at 6am to get there in time to start setting up at 8.30am. When I got there I saw a slew of volunteers waiting with a glorified golfcart to haul my goods to my spot. All I had to do was direct them a little and give them my booth number and they were off delivering the load. I parked the car and moseyed on over to my spot to find everything there ready for the setting up process.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day, just sunny enough but not too much, just cloudy enough, just breezy enough. Actually it was pretty breezy, but after my experience in Greenville this was nothing I was going to get upset at.
Sales were also great and it helped that I finally had redone all my little signage that I’d been meaning to do for months. It helped people really know what they were looking at right away without me having to explain it every time. In my experience with my goods people like to just make up their minds in silence about if and what they are getting, so I don’t like to keep interrupting their thoughts with these little facts.

I thought that the show as a whole was a great thing and concept too. It’s put on by The John Tyler Community College, and they had tons of things to do for kids and adults and everything in between. They had great workshops and demos all day long. Every one that I encountered all day long from the vendors to the customers to the people working the event were happy and cheery and a pleasure to be around. I will most definitely be planning on doing this show again in the future if they’ll have me.

That night I stayed in Richmond with a friend who was nice enough to let me invite myself into her house for the night. The next day I was treated to yet another fantastic show; the Spring Badabing!

Unlike Saturday, Sunday was rainy rainy rainy. But fortunately the rockin’ Richmond Craft Mafia ladies rose to the callenge by helping the vendors unload double time. I literally barely stuck one foot out of my car and before I realised I was surrounded by volunteers with umbrellas that were busy both keeping me dry and hauling my goods to my table inside.

The venue was lovely and the vendors were great! I loved seeing the RCM ladies I know, and meeting a few that have been added to the bunch since I saw them last. I did a good bit of shopping and trading, and I even won one of the raffle prizes! (As a matter of fact, I won the raffle twice, but I passed the second winning ticked on as I had already been spoiled a plenty at that point)

I was extremely pleased with my table location and traffic, and proud of cramming a whole lot of product on my table without having it look overwhelming (or at least I don’t think it did!) Shoppers were there non stop, and their spending and excitement was great- the RCM should give themselves a big pat on the back for a job well done.

The ride back home was wet and nasty, but I made good time, and was buzzing like a bumble bee from having such a great weekend.

Next week I am doing a double-header again. Cary NC on Saturday and Alexandria VA on Sunday. Wish me luck!

Moore Square Farmer’s Market take II

Apr 22nd, 2008 Posted in Business Topics, Handmaidens | no comment »

The Handmaidens are back at the Moore Square Farmers Market again tomorrow after a fun and successful time last week. People were very excited to see that crafters were getting added to the regular line-up of farmers and food vendors, and we were more than happy to be there and do ourlocal produce shopping for the week while nibbling on the organic cupcakes that were sold next to our booth.

We are looking ahead at the calendar and planning on having a handmaidens booth out there once a month over the summer. I will keep you posted about the dates once we set them.

So as if it’s not crazy enough that three of our friends had babies in the last two weeks, the last of the three was born while mom and dad were speeding to the hospital at 80 mph! They even made it on to the news. Check it out, it’s a crazy story!

Congratulations all, and happy birthday all you little babies!

Edited to add: Holy Cow- their story even made it onto CNN!

Show Recap- Uptown Artsfest/Piratefest Greenville NC

Apr 17th, 2008 Posted in Business Topics | no comment »

This is the show that forever will be ingrained in my brain as ‘survivor, the art show!’. Unlike I had mentioned in an earlier post; we decided the day before the show that it may not be a great idea after all to make this show a family trip as there was a good chance of some unfriendly weathers. The forecasts everywhere mentioned a 40% chance of rain, and even if there was no rain, there was some promise of fairly strong wind gusts. Knowing that weather and shows do not mix very well, soon after I started setting up the morning of the show I gave myself a little mental high-five for having the foresight not to bring the family, as it would have probably given me a mental breakdown along with all the near heart attacks I had every time my tent nearly took off.

I could probably go into much detail with a blow-by-blow description of all the things that went down, or up, or over, but you don’t care to read all of that, and I don’t care to live through all of that again. What it came down to is that minutes into the show I ended up having only my bigger displays up which had proven to be anchored enough not to go anywhere, causing about half of my usual inventory to be locked up tightly in transport boxes. So my tent looked bare, but that’s better than having half my goods spread allover the downtown streets of Greenville. Number one lesson of the day- Bring cinder blocks for tent anchors in the future. Gallon water jugs just don’t do the trick.

I will tell you two great thing though, despite the weather, sales were good enough to keep me coming back for more next year. Secondly, the very nice lady in the booth next to me had her husband track the weather from his office. He called her at 3.30pm (the show was to end at 6pm) to let her know about a storm on the way that had a tornado warning on it with supposedly a confirmed tornado touch down. This very same storm was to be on top of us within 45 minutes. I don’t think I need to tell you how mortified I am at just the thought of a tornado to make you understand just how fast I started packing up my goods. By the time the show organizers themselves got around to making the announcement of the approaching bad weather, I was mostly packed up and left to get my car to start loading her up. Within ten minutes all hell broke loose and rain and and wind whipped around like we were at the eye of a hurricane. I felt so bad for all the people who had only started breaking down 10 minutes previous, while at the same time I was so grateful for getting my early warning. Oddly enough, twenty minutes later the winds died down, the sun broke out, and all was well again. But at that point my car was packed and I was headed home!

It’s Sasha’s Birthday!

Apr 15th, 2008 Posted in Uncategorized | no comment »

I almost forgot that today is the day that we decided to be Sasha’s big 1st birthday!!
When we got Sasha from the girl who had found her at a local dog pound, we didn’t know much about her other than the fact that she was ‘probably’ about 6 months old. So I did some retroactive calculation and we decided her birthday to be today.

Happy birthday little lady! You’ll be sure to get some delicious wet food today and a bunch of extra snuggles.
