Vintage Wallpaper Ring Section now on site

I went ahead and added all the vintage wallpaper rings I currently have in stock to the website. Until now they were only available in the etsy shop, but I am so in love with these rings and I know they are going to be a staple in my collections so they need their own permanent section on the site.

This is one of the things I really enjoy about maintaining a etsy shop even though I already have an active website. My reason #1 is that Etsy has risen so much in popularity among shoppers as a destinations to find great handmade products that I would be stupid not to create a level of visibility there, but secondly it’s a great little spot to get some exposure for new creations and get a feeling for any reactions they get.

Even though Etsy itself doesn’t offer any stats yet aside from item views, (hopefully this will change soon) I love to use this little place to monitor reactions on each piece, and seeing how some items are more instantly loved in relation to others. It greatly helps me in making decisions in what to keep up, and what to let go.

Anyhow, go check out the rings I have in stock now- they are only $25 and make a GREAT gift.

Project 365, take 3 and back with a vengeance, please help!

So I can’t seem to get this idea of project 365 out of my head, even though I have tried it twice before and both times I stopped a small while into it. If you re not already familiar with p365, it’s a project that I found on Flickr (where I host the bulk of my pictures) where you take a picture everyday for a year, and share them online. There is a slew and ever growing number of people that participate in it, with a great range from snapshots, to amateur, to proffesional photographers. I’d like to think I am of the ’snapshot to amateur’ photography range. I really admire professional photography, and I really enjoy tinkering around with my camera, so I suppose more accurately I am a ’snapshot photographer with a dream’ And so p365 is a great way to go through my day exercising a little bit of a photographer’s eye, while at the same time getting an opportunity to play a little with my camera settings, while hopefully growing more comfortable with the lesser known settings.

I’d really like to succeed in at least one run of p365, but I need to find a way to keep me motivated. And I think I’ve got it figured out. I am going to try to set a ‘theme’ for each week. For instance this week1, the theme will be ’school’, conveniently enough as my son is starting kindergarten. I’d love to have your help in picking out themes for the remaining 51 weeks in the next 365 days. And themes can be anything really as I am planning on keeping my interpretations of the themes fairly loose. So it can be a feeling, a thing, a color, a word, a book, a country, an animal, an object, a season, a name, a concept, absolutely anything at all. I’d really love it if you gave me a theme (or 2 or 9) to help me keep motivated with keeping the p365 going, and help me by switching it up every week. Comment below to tell me your theme suggestion(s)

I am going to be keeping all my 365 pictures on a separate page this time around, see here if you want. Or for all old and current attempts, see the flickr folder.

Mom, uninterrupted.

Today is Nolan’s first day of Kindergarten, and so I have been enjoying a day of quiet uninterrupted cleaning, work and music listening. I have loved toting around town with my little man all summer, and soaking up all the goodness summer has to offer with him by my side, but MAN what a thoroughly enjoyable time is to be had when he is at school for several hours every day! Last year, towards the end of his first (and only) year at preschool I had started to take the peace and quiet and therefor extremely productive days for granted. I did not realize this until summer started, and preschool ended. I vow now to NEVER take this for granted again.

Other than the peace and quiet (did I mention this already?) I also really enjoy the days that Nolan goes to school because 1- Nolan L.O.V.E.S school. He loves the attention, the activities, the kids, the teachers, the play time, the learning, the reading, and whatever else he comes across during his school day. So it’s obviously a much more stimulating place for him compared to at home where I only have limited attention, energy, and time for such exciting things. And 2- By the time he comes home I always feel like I can be so much of a better rested, focussed, and not-yet worn down mommy to him. And that feels good.

So what have I been doing with my (uninterrupted ) time today? Before Greg even came back from dropping Nolan off I had cleaned the kitchen, picked of all of the 200 toys around the house, and made both beds! Then I was able to go straight into work (WOW), got orders ready to ship, made a special order, took pictures of all the new vintage wallpaper earrings, edited every single one of them, listed a few on Etsy (more to be added later), added songs onto my play lists, got to spend a few minutes on facebook, and here I am now, I even have time to update my blog before Greg brings Nolan home again. Pure Bliss!

Now this is Nolan’s only day of school this week due to staggered entry, and he is not going back until Tuesday next week, but consider me one rested and recharged mommy already!

Itching Green Thumb

I can not believe it’s been over a year since we moved to this house and it’s taken me that long to finally start to garden again. If you know me even a little you are probably aware that I absolutely love to garden. So it’s pretty crazy that up until a few weeks ago the only plants I owned were a few in pots by the front steps, and a handful indoor ones.

Finally I couldn’t take it anymore and in July, despite the ridiculous summer heat, I grabbed a shovel and went to work on a shady spot in one of the back corners of our back yard. After much sweat, blisters, and inspiring hard work from my 5-year-old I finally have a little something I can officially call a garden again! Though it’s pretty bare still I can not tell you how much excitement it brings me to be able to go into my backyard to water my little garden.

This time I am also making an active attempt to harvest seeds from my own flowers, and veggies and fruits I have bought locally. I have no idea how good seeds harvested by yours truly will grow in the spring, but I won’t know until I try will I?

Trying something new

So along with all my different shapes and sizes of vintage wallpaper pendants, I have always had these 2×2inch pendants, and though they are gorgeous, they are the slowest size to sell. I think people are often a little intimidated by their size- which I can’t really blame them for, they are rather large and you have to be a confident jewelry wearer to pull large pieces off.

Now I have already been planning holiday ornaments for this fall using vintage Christmas cards and images in this same size pendant, and as I have been gearing up to make those I thought to myself, “you know what! Why don’t I just also already convert all the 2×2 vintage wallpaper pendants I already have, into ornaments too!” They are the perfect size already, and because they are not holiday specific images, they can be used throughout your house all year long. So I added a little vintage ribbon to them all and ornaments they now are.

I am slowly adding them into the Etsy shop, so take a gander and let me know if you agree with this little transformation. I do believe they are definitely less intimidating dangling from a door nob, or tree branch, or even in a window. They are a perfect little shabby chic decorating accent that can be used allover the house, and they would be a great gift for your decorating shabby-chic loving friends.

OMG delicious and EASY Picadillo dinner

Picadillo

This dinner made it to the top of my favorite recipes list as soon as I sampled it while I was finishing up cooking it. It’s incredibly quick, incredibly easy, and incredibly tasty. It’s even easier if instead of chopping chicken breasts in a food processor as the recipe calls for, you just buy ground chicken in the first place. I actually used ground turkey for this time, though I have made it with ground chicken since and it’s equally yummy. Also, the first time I used a home made salsa with whole black beans and corn in it I found at the farmer’s market. She second time I used a store bought (Trader Joe’s) salsa, and again it was equally delicious.
Finally- the first time I made mashed new potatoes to accompany this Picadillo, and the second time I made rice with black beans and cilantro instead. You guessed it- both worked together perfectly! Now go make it and I promise it will be your favorite too.

August to-do list

It feels great to be back on track again with the to-do list productiveness. Can you believe it’s August already! Nolan will be going to his first day of Kindergarten for staggered entry at the end of this month, and then beginning next month he’ll be a full time kindergartener! So expect to see a lot of back-to-school activities popping up on my to do list.

    Counting my Change

    Coin sorting

I am excited to share that after getting them out into the public last month I have already received a great response to my Made Of Money jewelry pieces. It seems you all are just as excited about them as I am! Aside from selling quite a few of them already, I have received tons of compliments, and customers have often asked about the possibility of me creating these pieces with coins they have had for a long time without having much use for them but special to their history. I am please to say that I am more than happy to make something with coins you provide! I love making custom orders because every single time I design and create something I hope it’s something special to the person that ends up wearing it, instead of something disposable and meaningless. When making a custom order I know for a fact that the piece will be very special to the recipient, which makes me love what I do all the more.

After happily receiving such a great response already I went ahead and sorted my big stash of coins from around the world so I can have a better idea of the variety I will be able to offer as I make them. At my disposal at this time I have Italian lire, Spanish pesetas, Portugese escudos, French centimes and francs, Belgian francs, German pfennigs, British pence, and Japanese Yen. But now that I have a purpose for these I am hoping to actually grow the variety of coins I own. Ebay here I come!

Made of Money Coins in production

So after the sorting I went ahead and got a batch of the coins ready for production. I just finished a total of 10 necklaces and 10 earrings which I will be bringing along to my shows and a few of them will appear in the Etsy shop before the end of the week!

    Another Summer Salad Dinner

    bean and potato salad

As you can tell I am sure I will use any excuse to use potatoes in my meals. I think that so far this year I have cooked more with potatoes that I have in the past 12+ years that I have lived here in the US of A. At the farmer’s market new potatoes have been popping up allover the place and they are so delicious, I’ve been bringing home pounds of them and substituting them for the regular potatoes recipes have been calling for. So that’s what I did with this recipe, instead of fingerling potatoes I just used red and yellow (or white?) new potatoes. I also didn’t use any wax beans, which the recipe does call for, but I failed to find any at the market. I don’t know if it would have changed the flavor of this salad much as I have actully never eaten wax beans. It sure would have made the salad more colorful! This salad paired up with a grilled cheese burger topped with bacon, which I had conveniently fried some extras of while preparing some to put in the salad, this was a great summer meal sure to be repeated.

    Paperwork, and how I procrastinate

    paperwork
This is a little something of a pattern for me; I know paperwork and filing and organizing is to be done, and I don’t do it, and then I don’t do it some more, and then I do it too late. And then when I finally buckle down and do it I realize I actually do enjoy doing it.

Then why do I keep procrastinating on these tasks so much? I really don’t get it. Maybe it’s because it’s the farthest thing from being creative connected to running my business? Or maybe it’s because I secretly don’t want to know how much I spent on supplies, show applications, or advertising? Or maybe I don’t like to see that I didn’t make as much as I would have liked to that month? Or maybe it’s because I wish I could afford to hire an office person who could to these things for me instead? Whatever the reason, I need to get over it and keep reminding myself that I really actually enjoy doing these tasks, just so long as I do them in a timely fashion and keep them from piling up too high.

What’s one of your procrastination issues? Come on, make me feel less alone in this!
